Medicare Eligibility Requirements

Because knowing when you qualify is the first step toward confident coverage.

Who’s Eligible for Medicare

You’re eligible for Medicare if all the following are true:

✅ You live in the United States.

✅ You’re a U.S. citizen, or you’ve lived in the U.S. for at least five continuous years.

✅ You’re 65 or older, or you have a qualifying illness or disability (like End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS).

If these don’t apply to you yet, you’re not eligible for Medicare right now—but that’s okay.
You can still start learning how Medicare works and what each part covers so you’re ready when it’s your time to enroll.

If You Qualify Before 65

You may be eligible for Medicare early if:

✅ You’ve been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for at least 24 months,

✅ You’ve been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and need regular dialysis or a kidney transplant, or

✅ You have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease)—in which case, your Medicare coverage starts the same month your SSDI benefits begin.

Early eligibility gives you access to the same Medicare benefits as someone turning 65—Parts A and B, plus the option to add drug coverage or Medicare Advantage later on.
