Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
Because your prescriptions deserve clear coverage.
How It Works
Once you’ve signed up for Original Medicare (Parts A & B), you can add Medicare Part D to help cover the cost of your prescription drugs.
Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, and you’ll likely have several options to choose from.
Each plan covers a specific list of prescription drugs—called a formulary.
What to Know About Formularies
Every Medicare Part D plan must cover a broad range of prescription drugs used to treat common conditions.
But each plan’s list is a little different. So before you enroll, double-check that:
✅ Your current prescriptions are included on the plan’s formulary
✅ You understand what tier each drug falls into (tiers affect how much you pay)
✅ You’re comfortable with the plan’s pharmacy network and preferred pricing options
If a medication you take isn’t covered, your doctor might recommend an alternative—or you may have to pay the full cost out-of-pocket.
Helpful Tip
Because formularies can change each year, it’s smart to review your plan during the Medicare Annual Enrollment (October 15 – December 7) to make sure it still covers what you need.
