Medicare Part B: Doctor Coverage
Because staying healthy shouldn’t mean guessing what’s covered.
What Part B Covers
Medicare Part B helps pay for your doctor and outpatient medical care, including:
- Doctor visits (primary care and specialists)
- Outpatient hospital services and same-day procedures
- Lab tests, X-rays, and diagnostic screenings
- Durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs or walkers)
- Preventive care, including vaccines, annual wellness visits, and many screenings at no cost
You’ll use Part B for the everyday and preventive care that keeps you healthy, whether that’s a checkup, a flu shot, or a follow-up with a specialist.
What You Pay
Here’s how your costs work under Part B:
- Annual deductible: You pay the first $283 (in 2026) of covered medical costs each year.
- After that: Medicare pays 80% of approved amounts, and you pay the remaining 20% (this is called coinsurance).
There’s no yearly limit on what you might pay out of pocket under Part B, unless you have additional coverage — like a Medicare Advantage plan or Medigap policy — to help cover those extra costs.
What Part B Doesn’t Cover
Part B doesn’t cover:
- Routine foot care or cosmetic surgery
- Prescription drugs (you’ll need Part D for that)
- Long-term custodial care
