Medicare Part A: Hospital Coverage

Because a hospital stay shouldn’t come with billing surprises.

What Part A Covers

Medicare Part A helps pay for hospital-related care, including:

  • Inpatient hospital stays (room, meals, nursing care, and certain supplies)
  • Skilled nursing facility care (short-term rehabilitation after a hospital stay)
  • Hospice care (if you have a terminal illness)
  • Home health care (if ordered by your doctor after a hospital stay)

You’ll use Part A whenever you’re admitted as an inpatient—not for routine outpatient or emergency visits.

What You Pay

Here’s how your costs work under Part A:

  • Hospital deductible: You pay the first $1,736 of covered hospital costs for each benefit period.*
  • Days 1–60: After you meet your deductible, Medicare covers 100% of approved hospital costs.
  • Days 61–90: You pay $434 per day.
  • Days 91 and beyond: You pay $868 per “lifetime reserve day”—and you get up to 60 of those over your lifetime.

💡 A “benefit period” begins the day you’re admitted as an inpatient and ends once you’ve been out of the hospital (or a skilled nursing facility) for 60 days in a row. You could have more than one benefit period in a year.

What Part A Doesn’t Cover

Part A doesn’t include:

  • Doctor visits while you’re in the hospital (that’s Part B)
  • Private rooms (unless medically necessary)
  • Long-term custodial care
  • Personal items like TV, phone, or toiletries

There’s also no annual spending limit under Part A—meaning your total out-of-pocket costs depend on how long and how often you’re hospitalized.
