Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage

Because one plan can bring it all together.

What It Is

Once you’ve signed up for Original Medicare (Parts A & B), you can choose to get your coverage through Medicare Part C, also called Medicare Advantage.

These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They follow Medicare’s rules, but often combine your coverage into one easy plan — hospital care, doctor visits, and sometimes even prescriptions.

What’s Covered

Most Medicare Advantage plans bundle together:

  • Hospital care (Part A)
  • Doctor visits (Part B)
  • Prescription drugs (Part D)
  • Many include extra benefits, too

And while Original Medicare covers many services separately, Medicare Advantage plans wrap them into one coordinated plan that helps make managing your healthcare simpler and more predictable.

How It Works

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll still pay your Part B premium to the government. Then, Medicare pays your insurance company a set amount each month to manage your care.

Unlike Original Medicare, which works with nearly any provider in the U.S., most Medicare Advantage plans use a network of doctors and hospitals.

That means:

  • You’ll usually pay less if you stay in-network
  • Coverage outside your network may be limited (except in emergencies)
  • Some plans have small local networks, while others include broader regional options

Choosing a Plan

When you compare Medicare Advantage plans, take a moment to check:

  • Which doctors and hospitals are in the network
  • What you’ll pay for the care you expect to need
  • Whether your prescriptions are covered under the plan’s drug list

And remember — you can change to a different Medicare Advantage plan (or switch back to Original Medicare) during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period each year.
