How to Sign Up for Medicare Advantage
Because knowing your options helps you get the right fit — and avoid surprises later.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Before you can join a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan, you need to be enrolled in Original Medicare—both Part A (hospital coverage) and Part B (doctor coverage).
Once that’s done, head to Medicare.gov/plan-compare to see what Medicare Advantage plans are available in your area.
Step 2: Compare Plans in Your Area
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
Each plan sets its own rules, provider networks, and monthly costs—so comparing carefully can save you hundreds each year.
Before you sign up, make sure you know the answers to these questions:
- What’s the total monthly cost?
How much will the plan cost each month in addition to your Part B premium? - Are your doctors in-network?
If not, are there other nearby providers or specialists you’d feel comfortable seeing? - What’s the deductible?
How much will you pay before your plan starts covering medical costs? - Is there a separate prescription deductible?
If so, how much will you pay for generic and brand-name drugs once you reach it? - What’s the maximum you’ll spend out of pocket?
Every Medicare Advantage plan has an annual limit on what you’ll pay for in-network care. - Are there extra benefits?
Some plans include additional benefits, but they vary by plan.
If you’re unsure about any of the above, you can call the insurance company offering the plan to confirm details—especially for doctors, prescriptions, and copays.
Step 3: Enroll in a Plan
You can enroll through ALEX®, directly on Medicare.gov, by calling the plan provider or enrolling with them online, or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.
Once you’re enrolled, you’ll get your Medicare Advantage plan card in the mail.
Bring this card to the doctor’s office or pharmacy whenever you use your coverage.
Keep your red, white, and blue Medicare card in a safe place at home—you’ll still have it, but your Medicare Advantage plan card will be the one you use most often for care and prescriptions.
💡 Tip: If you start your enrollment with ALEX, you’ll get step-by-step guidance to compare plans, confirm network doctors, and enroll confidently—all in one place.
Step 4: Review and Use Your Coverage
Once your plan starts:
- Review your plan’s network before scheduling appointments.
- Set reminders for the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7).
- Use your plan’s member portal or app to check claims, costs, and covered services.
