How Do I Sign Up for Medicare Part D and Medigap?

Because choosing your coverage should feel like checking a box—not solving a riddle.

First, make sure you’re enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A & B).

Once that’s done, you can shop for Part D (drug coverage) and Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans on the official Medicare website: Medicare.gov/plan-compare

These plans come from private insurance companies, but they follow federal rules—which means you can compare them side-by-side and know what you’re getting.

Choosing a Medicare Part D Plan

Part D covers prescription drugs. But not all plans cover the same medications or charge the same prices.

Before you enroll, check:

  • Are my medications covered?
Look up your prescriptions in the plan’s formulary (the list of covered drugs).
  • What tier are they on?
Drugs are grouped by “tiers.” Lower tiers = lower copays.
  • What’s the monthly premium?
Each plan sets its own price.
  • Is there a deductible?
Some plans require you to pay a certain amount before coverage starts.
  • How much will I pay at the pharmacy?
Check both your local and mail-order options. Generic vs. brand-name costs can vary.

💡 Tip: Call the plan directly and confirm your current prescriptions are covered at the prices you expect—especially if you take multiple medications.

Choosing a Medigap Plan (Medicare Supplement)

Medigap helps pay for what Original Medicare doesn’t—things like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

There are 10 standardized Medigap plans (labeled A through N). Each one covers a specific set of costs—and the benefits are the same no matter which company sells it.
Compare Medigap Plans on Medicare.gov

When comparing plans, ask:

  • How much is the monthly premium?
Prices can vary by company even if coverage is identical.
  • Is there a limit on out-of-pocket costs?
Some Medigap plans include built-in caps to help keep your costs predictable.

Timing matters:
If you apply more than 6 months after your Part B starts, you could face higher premiums—or be denied based on your health.
During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period (the first 6 months after your Part B begins), you’re guaranteed coverage at the standard rate—no medical questions asked.

Using Your New Coverage

Once you’ve enrolled:

  • You’ll receive a Part D card and a Medigap (Supplement) card in the mail.
  • Keep both with your red, white, and blue Medicare card.

Here’s how to use them:

  • Doctor visits: Bring your Medicare card and your Medigap card.
  • Pharmacy trips: Bring your Part D card.

That’s it—you’re covered.
